Mission Statement and Goals
After thinking about why I decided to teach I thought about my philosophy of education. Then I came up with my mission statement. After writing my mission statement, I came up with five goals that I would like to reach in the coming year 2008. By reaching these goals, I feel that I will be able to live up to mission as a teacher.
Mission Statement
It is my responsibility to educate my students in a caring, nurturing environment. I will make learning fun by teaching interesting lessons with enthusiasm to my students. I will ensure that each individual child in my class succeeds. I will promote learning and education in a positive way. I will encourage parent involvement (Frank, 1999).
Goals
The first goal that I have is to educate my students in a caring, nurturing environment. I will be caring and compassionate towards all of my students. I will show my students that they are loved and valued. I will always be there for my students and offer them the help and support they need. I want my students to feel that they can trust me. I will have egalitarianism. I will implement and teach rules for my students to follow in my classroom. I will set reasonable consequences and treat all students fairly. I will teach my students the importance of being equal and fair (Kottler, Zehm, & Kottler, 2005).
The second goal that I have is to teach interesting lessons with great enthusiasm. I can reach this goal by having creativity and novelty. I will challenge and motivate my students to learn and do their best. I can teach in various ways and make changes in my teaching from time to time. I can provide challenging activities for my students (Kottler, Zehm, & Kottler, 2005).
The third goal I have is to ensure that each individual child in my class succeeds. I can do this by setting high expectations for my students. I can design my lessons to help meet the needs of all types and levels of learners in my class. I can spend more time teaching small groups. I can set aside a few minutes each day to work with each child individually. I will have patience when I am working with children. I can increase the “wait time” when I ask students questions. I can go slower with some of my special needs students to ensure they have an understanding of one skill before going on to the next skill (Kottler, Zehm, & Kottler, 2005).
The fourth goal I have is to promote learning and education in a positive way. I can teach my students the importance and reasons behind the skills and lessons they are required to learn. I can show my students that learning is a continuous life long process. I can learn more about the subjects and areas I am required to teach. I will be a positive role model for my students. I will have a positive attitude towards teaching and learning. I want my students, colleagues, and parents to see me as an accomplished professional (Kottler, Zehm, & Kottler, 2005).
The fifth goal I have is to encourage more parental involvement. I want to involve my students’ parents in their children’s education. I can do this by providing opportunities for parents to volunteer to work in my classroom. I can communicate to my parents through newsletter, a class web site, emails, phone calls, and parent conferences. I will try to be free of negative feelings and emotions. I will remain calm and professional when interacting with students and parents. I will be positive and considerate when working with parents and students (Kottler, Zehm, & Kottler, 2005).
