October

Welcome to our October page. We did lots of stuff this month. We were very busy all month long with something everyday.

Mark's Melon Patch

Here the Talking Scarecrow is telling us all about the adventures we will have at Mark's Melon Patch.

Here some of the students and Mrs. Ragan are sitting in the wagon going on the hay ride.

Here is a picture of the pumpkin patch and a gorilla! We saw seven gorillas while we were on the hay ride.

Here a man is telling us about the different kinds of pumpkins and how they grow. We even saw a Cinderella pumpkin, just like the one the fairy Godmother used to change into a coach in the story of Cinderella!

We went through the Haunted House. Some of us were really scared!

We got to jump in a bouncy pumpkin. We thought that was cool!

I made all of the students' pictures inside of the sign in the front of Mark's Melon Patch. The students had to stick their head through little holes in the sign for the picture.

After we visited the melon patch we went and ate lunch and walked through the Albany Mall. Here are all of the students with a parent helper who went with us on the field trip. Ms. Rice even snuck in a little shopping while at the mall.

Kindergarten in Motion

We did a fun unit about motion. We learned that motion meant movement. We studied different objects and how they moved. We did lots of experiments with objects to see which directions they moved and how fast they moved and we tested some things to see if we could control the speed and direction in which they move in.

Here some boys are playing with miniature monster trucks,. They tried to see who could make the truck move the fastest. They learned that by pulling back on the trucks gave the trucks extra force to help them move faster and further.

We went out in the hallway to test the trucks. We all thought that if we pushed the trucks on a hard surface they would go faster. We were correct! We learned that the smoother and harder the surface the faster objects will move on it.

Kindergarten Truck Day!

Each year the kindergarten classes are lucky enough to see some big trucks. Mrs. Palmer, the school counselor, sets this up for us. We get to meet the drivers who drive the trucks and they explain all about their trucks and how they work. This always fits along perfect with our motion unit as the students learn how fast the trucks move, what helps them move, and the different directions the trucks can move in.

Reading Tubs!

Below are some pictures and things we did in our reading tubs during the month of October.

The students are stamping the upper and lower case letters of the alphabet on light tan paper. The students love using the stamps and it is a good way to help teach the letters of the alphabet. The students had to identify the letter before they could stamp it on paper.

This is a phonics activity in which the students take turns drawing a tile and they say the name of the picture on the tile, tell the sound they hear at the beginning, and what letter makes that sound. For example, if a students picks up the picture of a net the student would say net, /n/, n.

Spelling students' names. This activity the students use plastic letters to spell their and their classmates names. This helps students learn how to spell and identify their names as well as the names of the other students in the class.

Making words. Each week I have a making words tub in which the students make words from the word family we are working on that week. We had been working on the -an word family so the students would make -an words using letter tiles and then they would wrtie the word on handwriting paper. In this center the students are learning how to spell, create words, practice word families, and practice their handwriting skills all at the same time! This is one of my favorite tubs to do. An adult is always working at this center with the students to help them.

Happy Halloween!

On Friday, October 31 we did Halloween stuff all day. Here the students are decorating their treat bags. They colored and cut out Mr. Pumpkin earlier that morning.

Mr. Skeletons! The students cut out the bones of the human body and fastened them together with little brads. The skeletons took all afternoon to make. The students did a good job cutting them out. Mrs. Williamson, Mrs. Ragan, and I helped the students put them together and put the brads in them. We hung them from the ceiling with plastic hooks. I do this every year in the month of October. I try to do them at the beginning of the month so they can hang until Halloween. Not only are the students making skeletons, they are also learning about the human body as well.

After reading the book Go Away Big Green Monster, the students colored, cut out, and glued together a big green scary monster face.

This is Mr. Treat Pumpkin. He holds all of our yummy Halloween candy. My aunt makes the pumpkins. I love this pumpkin and look forward to using him every year in October. Isn't he cute?

Here Mrs. Ragan and a student are eating the yummy Halloween food we had at our Halloween Party.

Here is a plate of green boogers picked especially for the party! The students thought they were tasty and all the grown ups said "Gross!".

Here is a table of students eating away! We had cup cakes, nachos, soda, and lots of candy at the party.
